I received a thought provoking E-mail...
JoeC on February 01 2009 13:05
I received an E-mail today that I wanted to share with everyone:

My name is Jeff *******. I am an Orthodox Christian. I have seen an apparition and have had several other indisputable encounters with ghosts. I also believe that I was visited by my grandmother regularly for a while years after her death. These things do not go hand in hand with my religious upbringing. Orthodox Christians believe in the existence of angels and demons but have no opinion of ghosts that I know of.

I once saw Derek Acorah converse with a spirit and he stated that the spirit would not "cross over" because of fear of God's judgement...

The Old Testament condemned those who consulted with psychics or necromancers...

To be concise, can you put my spirit at ease? I don't believe in the credibility of most phsychics or mediums but "feel" that you are for real. So I ask, not for a reading, but just for a brief clarification. What do you believe happens between death and God's judgement? Where do ghosts fit in to the big picture? What is the difference between a necromancer and a medium? And do you have any insight into what happens after death; if so where does it fit in with Christianity.

God bless and protect you.

Amiably yours,
Jeff

This was my reply to Jeff:

Hi, Jeff.

I almost never get involved in discussions that revolve around religion or religious beliefs. All too often, they become volatile and, sometimes, downright ugly.

As a mere mortal, there are so many things that I don't understand. I often say, "we don't know what we don't know." I do, however, have beliefs and opinions about a variety of subjects.

Yes, the Old Testament does speak against "consulting with psychics or necromancers" ... and yet there are numerous accounts of communication with/visits from spirits and angels. The argument against consulting with psychics has been presented to me many times. My response? The Old Testament was written thousands of years ago by MEN who subjectively interpreted the word of God. And not to get picky, but The Bible also states that it is perfectly fine to own slaves, kill your neighbor if he insists on working on the Sabbath, sacrifice animals, etc. Times change ... and I believe that God, in many ways, has changed with the times.

I believe that my ability (and the ability of others) to communicate with spirits is a blessing from God. It is an ability that we all have; some of us are just better able to "tap into" that ability. I certainly don't view psychic abilities as an affront to God or a "sin."

I was raised Catholic, but I have blended my Catholic upbringing with my own beliefs and opinions about God, the universe, life, death and spirituality. The end result: a very personal and profound relationship with my Creator.

I NEVER try to convince or convert others to my ways of thinking. I encourage everyone to develop his/her beliefs (in positive ways, of course) and to develop a close relationship with God (or whatever one chooses to call The Divine).

You asked: What do you believe happens between death and God's judgment? Where do ghosts fit in to the big picture?

I believe that some souls are fearful of God's judgment and punishment. Therefore, they choose not to complete the transition between life and the afterlife ... so they are stuck someplace in between. Many of them wander the earth plane ... and I believe this is what we call ghosts. Other reasons why a soul may not complete this transition might be feelings of unfinished business with their former life or attachments to people they cannot bear to leave behind.

I believe spirits are souls who have completed their transition to the afterlife and return to visit those they love or places they feel fondly attached to.

I believe that after death, our souls leave our earthly bodies. I believe we are surrounded by the bright white light that has been described by those who have had near death experiences. I believe we are met by loved ones who come to help us with our transition to the afterlife.

My concept of the afterlife is unlike the Biblical description of Heaven. (No opulent mansions, gold-paved streets or angels floating around on clouds, playing harps!) I believe the afterlife (or "spirit world," as I often refer to it) is a place that is far less dense than our current third dimensional realm. It is a place filled with peace ... a place where we can grow and learn ... a place where there is no pain.

I do believe that each soul, shortly after the death of the body, is shown a life review ... a "replay" of his/her life that has recently ended. We see our successes and our failures ... and we are given the chance to atone for our transgressions.

(By the way, I do not believe that God is as judgmental and punishing as many people would want us to believe He is. MY God is loving, caring, understanding, giving, benevolent, forgiving ... you get the picture, I'm sure.)

Do I believe in the traditional concept of Hell? I do not. But I DO believe that those who have strayed from the Light of God are dealt with severely (in a "tough love" sort of way) in an attempt to redeem their souls.

To the best of my knowledge, "medium" and "necromancer" are synonyms for those persons who communicate with spirits (or "the dead"). If there is a difference, I'm not sure what that difference is.

Please know that these are just my own personal opinions. My own beliefs. Thoughts that comfort me and give me hope.

One last thing: I pray to God many times every day. Without Him, I am nothing! With Him, the possibilities are limitless!

All the best,
Chip

I wanted to comment on this... my mother had a near death experience , her blood pressure was bottoming out on her...she said she seen a bright light like no other and when she could see what was around her she was standing and looking around she said there was lots of people standing around talking... she said she didn't recognize anyone but as she looked around she said it was so beautiful! she stressed how the flowers were of such color like you can't even imagine! she said she felt such peace no aches or pain it was perfect and she said that anything here on earth never crossed her mind (her kids and such) my mom said though that she felt if she would have stayed there that she would have eventually thought of us and wanted to see us kids again... now before my mom started to tell me this she asked me to "please don't think i'm crazy"... my mom has never talked about stuff like that EVER... i never really believed in the near death experience until that moment... now the funny part of this story was she started to hear someone screaming MOM! and it was my big mouth sister...lmbo my mom said she started saying NO...NO... and the reason she was saying no...no is because she told me that she didn't want to leave this place... and another instance i heard of was a friend of mine... her sister had a massive stroke (almost died) when she got her sister home there were some roses sitting on her dresser... her sister pointed at them and said " them flowers are pretty but not as pretty as God's flowers they are beautiful!" my friend said her sister sat there and said it over and over... now when i my friends sister went to the other side i don't know if she knew anyone but i do believe that with some people the loved ones do come to greet them... but anyway i just wanted to share that with you all... I also wanted to put my two cents in pertaining to what I know about near death experiences. My father was in a horrible car accident years ago that left him paralyzed from the waist down and wheelchair bound for the rest of his life (a passenger in my father's car was also killed).
He had a near death experience while in the hospital after the accident. My father told me that it was as if he was floating on the ceiling, looking down at all the doctors and nurses and hearing the commotion of them trying to revive him. He heard the elevator bell when it got to the floor he was on and the scuffling of shoes as the medical team ran into his room. He said the doctor that was working on him yelled out for him not to die on him now, he had done too much for him! When Dad was revived, he told the doctor what he heard him say and the doctor turned very pale and had to sit down! Dad also said that he felt more peaceful during the near death experience than he ever has in his entire life.
Also, I agree with you completely about having to develop your own personal belief about God and religion when it comes to ghosts and spirits. In my opinion, you are also correct when you said that you believe that God isn't as judgemental and punishing as many people believe. You have many more opinions about God and religion in this post that I agree with!
It's VERY nice to know that I'm not the only person who believes the way I do about God. I also pray several times daily and I feel like God is a close, personal friend of mine whom I couldn't possibly live without!
